Mugshot #7 - Roxanne "the Streak" Duke

Of all the mugshots I have painted since November, painting myself proved to be the most difficult. The challenge proved to be seeing only shapes, and not to see my mom's lips, nor my dad's nose, and  especially, the avoidance of seeing the "Oops there went gravity" signs.

  1. This looks great, Roxanne! It is hard to paint a self portrait, but you nailed it. I think you should do another one. :-)

  2. Thanks Linda, I couldn't believe how hard it was to separate what I was seeing. I think I will try another one, as I have never painted a self portrait mugshot before. Thanks for you kind comment.

  3. Love your self portrait! I've never been able to nail one of myself so I know what you mean. Nice job!

  4. I know what you're saying... Although for me it was less of 'my mom's lips' etc. and more of 'is that me? is that really me?' - but still our own face is the one we know best, so it should feel quite natural painting a self-portrait.
Are you happy with the result (as you should be)?

  5. oh - forgot to add: I just realized from your self-mug that you have GREEN eyes! I thought they were blue-ish (and seems most of the Gang painted them blue as well..). Funny.

  6. Hi Regula,

My eyes are green, on the photo they do look bluish. I like the painting, in as far as the overall essence looks like me, but what I struggled with was the cool side /warm side, and the brushstrokes were less than confidently placed. Interesting, and I enjoyed painting my mug. Maybe, I am to critical of painting because I do know this face best!!! Hmmm ...

  7. Hi Roxanne! I agree with you all -it IS more challenging to do a self portrait. It's hard enough to do a face you know intimately like a spouse, child, parent...but with your own face, you have to become so objective and overcome how you think of yourself or how you want to look. I personally find it kind of brutal. However, you did a nice job and I like your style.

  8. Nice job. I found it difficult as well. I painted another self portrait, for fun. It was a different pose and looks like a different person. I kept getting hung up on exactly what you said- mom's nose etc.
